Those huge, daunting goals, like losing 20 pounds, reading a book every night instead of binge-watching TV, or changing careers, can seem really scary. Why? Because they are massive, life-changing goals!

This fear can stop you before you even begin. It happens to everyone.

I used to be paralyzed by these big goals until I read a book called “10 Minute Time Management: The Stress-Free Guide to Getting Stuff Done” by Ric Thompson. It’s a short, quick read, but it’s packed with helpful tips on tackling long-term goals.

The concept is simple: start with 10-minute intervals. Set 10-minute goals. Or even just work on your goals for 5 minutes a day. Does that seem manageable?

Think of it as breaking down your goals into bite-sized pieces. It might seem obvious, but have you tried it?

Big projects not only seem intimidating, they usually take longer than we expect. Ric Thompson explained a useful rule: estimate the time you think a project will take and then multiply that by 1.5.

So, yes, our goals can be scary and take more time than we initially think. But that’s where the 10-minute rule comes in handy. You tackle small chunks of your big goal bit by bit until it feels more manageable.

Think about how many times you’ve avoided cleaning your house because it seemed like it would take forever, but once you started, you got into the groove and an hour later, the whole house was clean. It didn’t seem so bad in the end, right?

The same goes for our goals. Once you start, you realize it’s not as overwhelming as you thought. Ten minutes can turn into 30 minutes, then an hour, and so on. The key is just getting started.

When you only have to work on something for 10 minutes, it’s much easier to dive in.

Over the past seven years with DIY Active, the biggest lesson I’ve learned about goals is that starting is usually the hardest part.

Once you begin, everything else falls into place. Try the 10-minute goal rule on your next big project and see if it helps you start reaching your goals.
