Today, we’re exploring how technology and health intersect. Have you heard about ChatGPT? It’s an AI chatbot that’s gaining attention in the health community, and here’s why.
A recent study in the journal *Human Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics* tested ChatGPT with the top 50 most frequently-asked COVID-19 vaccine questions, many rooted in myths and misinformation (like the vaccine causing Long Covid). Impressively, ChatGPT scored an average of nine out of ten for accuracy!
Although not perfect, occasionally missing some details, experts at the GenPoB research group from the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria (IDIS) believe that ChatGPT can be a dependable source of non-technical information for the public.
This is especially beneficial for those of us without a deep scientific background who still want to understand vaccine science. Back in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed vaccine hesitancy as one of the top global health threats, much of which stemmed from misinformation on social media.
This is where ChatGPT shines. By debunking myths and providing accurate information, it can help boost vaccine acceptance. Antonio Salas, the lead author of the study and a Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, noted that ChatGPT’s language is accessible to the public while maintaining scientific integrity. However, he emphasized that ChatGPT should not replace expert advice or scientific evidence.
ChatGPT’s user-friendly nature makes it accessible to many people. But like any tool, it has its limitations. For instance, the same question asked at different times might yield slightly different answers.
Moreover, while designed for accuracy, there is a risk it could provide non-scientific answers if not properly trained. It’s a fantastic resource, but it’s crucial to use it wisely and double-check information when necessary.
The digital age offers many wonders, and ChatGPT is undoubtedly one of them. As we navigate a vast sea of online information, tools like ChatGPT can help us distinguish fact from fiction, especially regarding health. Always remember, while AI can offer guidance, consulting with healthcare professionals for health decisions is essential.
