Embrace Your Body, Banish Those Love Handles

Love handles, muffin top, whatever you call them, most people can’t stand that extra fat on the sides of their bodies because it’s so tough to get rid of. Toning your obliques is one of the hardest areas to train.

Exercise is super important to shape your body, but diet plays a huge role too. The saying “abs are made in the kitchen” definitely rings true, especially for tricky areas like love handles. Combining a good diet with targeted workouts boosts your chances of saying goodbye to love handles for good.

Here are five exercises recommended by Orangetheory Fitness trainer, Brooke Geffre, to help you burn off those love handles:

1. **Plank with Knee Drive:**
Start on your right elbow with your waist about a foot off the ground. Your right foot should be a bit in front of your left. Tighten your core, bring your right knee toward your chest, and meet it with your left elbow. Return to the plank position and repeat. Do three sets of 10 to 12 reps on each side.

2. **Medicine Ball Twists:**
Lie flat with your arms spread out. Place a medicine ball between your legs. Lift your legs into a tabletop position, then drop your knees to one side, keeping your back as flat as possible. Shift your legs to the other side and repeat. This targets your lower abs, love handles, and inner thighs. Aim for three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

3. **Bridge:**
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Raise your hips, pause at the top, and slowly lower back down. To make it harder, put a weight on your pelvis. Do four sets of 10 to 15 reps.

4. **Dumbbell Side Bends:**
Stand with a dumbbell in each hand. Keep your back straight and bend to the right as if reaching for the floor with the dumbbell. Repeat on the left side. Do at least three reps of 20 on each side.

5. **Russian Twists:**
Sit with knees slightly bent and elevated off the ground. Lean back a bit to balance on your butt. Take a weight and shift it from side to side about 50 times or for a minute.
