A Founder’s Perspective on Goal Setting

Every year, we set goals we’re determined to achieve, convinced that this time will be different. We all know the feeling—the plans start strong but somehow fall apart. It’s a cycle many of us are familiar with: setting ourselves up for failure, feeling guilty, trying again, and making the same mistakes.

Instead of setting ourselves up for failure, let’s take each setback as a learning opportunity. For instance, if you drink 15 sodas a week, don’t set an impossible goal to quit cold turkey. Instead, aim to cut your intake in half. Once you’ve achieved that, try halving it again. The key is setting achievable, measurable goals.

Many people set vague, lofty goals like “I’m going to be happy this year.” While it’s great to be optimistic, how do you measure your success? And who will help keep you on track? That’s why it’s crucial to have specific, measurable goals and someone to hold you accountable. These two elements go hand-in-hand. Without measurable goals, it’s hard to know if you’re making progress. Without accountability, it’s easy to fudge your progress or give up altogether.

Failure isn’t something to fear. In fact, it’s part of the process. No one achieves every goal they set, and that’s okay. If I met all my goals, I’d be living in a condo in the Keys with a fancy fishing boat! Instead, I’m thrilled if I hit 50-60% of my ambitious goals. If you’re constantly hitting all your targets, it might be time to aim higher.

So, what are your goals this year? If you want to “get in shape,” break it down into measurable steps. Combine these smaller goals to keep yourself on track and moving forward.

Having someone to hold you accountable is vital. This could be a workout buddy, a coworker, a family member, or your significant other. And if you need extra support, we’re here to help!
