What are the best outdoor workouts? Well, they’re simply activities that get you moving and enjoying the great outdoors. As the weather gets warmer, let’s make it a habit to get outside and be active every day!
With spring around the corner, we can look forward to brighter and warmer weather. Personally, I always feel better in the spring; seasonal affective disorder is definitely real! So, with the rising temperatures, why not take your workouts outside for a fun energy boost?
Here are some great outdoor workouts to try:
Instead of using the elliptical indoors, hop on a bike and explore outside. I’m lucky to live near a greenline, so I can ride as many miles as I want. Biking outside, whether with friends or alone, is a fantastic way to relieve stress. Once, I got so caught up in the scenery that I didn’t realize how far I’d biked—it was a long ride back! Plus, you can control your speed and intensity, whether you prefer a leisurely ride or an intense sweat session.
Running is another favorite of mine, especially when I’m on vacation at the beach. The breeze feels amazing! But you don’t need a beach to enjoy running outdoors. When you run outside, you can set goals and run towards them, which is much more motivating than running in place on a treadmill. No equipment is needed, making it one of my favorite workouts!
Swimming is a fun summer activity and a great workout. Did you know you can burn up to 585 calories per hour with a simple breaststroke? I love spending time in the pool on a hot day. Swimming doesn’t even feel like a workout when it’s refreshing and fun!
Even though I’m not the best basketball player, I still enjoy playing a game of CAT or just shooting hoops. If I miss a shot, it just means more running for rebounds, which adds to the workout. Find a local basketball court and burn off some steam!
Many gym exercises can be adapted to park equipment. Think push-ups or step-ups on a park bench, or pull-ups on monkey bars or tree branches. You can also bring a jump rope and enjoy the scenery while working out.
If an intense workout isn’t what you’re after, a walk or hike is a perfect stress reliever. If you have a dog, take them along to your local dog park; the exercise is good for both of you! Hiking can also be a great way to meet up with friends who have pets and enjoy a workout together.
Tennis is another fantastic outdoor workout. It’s a full-body exercise that improves your cardiovascular health and strengthens your arms, legs, and upper body. Plus, it’s a great mental workout too!
Canoeing and kayaking can be challenging outdoor workouts, depending on water conditions. The water might be calm or choppy, adding to the intensity. It’s a fun workout because you never know what the water will be like!
For me, working out outdoors always gives an awesome energy boost, especially after a long day inside. I usually prefer evening workouts, but starting the day with fresh air is also fantastic!
Try these outdoor workouts to enjoy fresh air and improve your health! I’d love to hear about some amazing outdoor workouts you’ve tried.
