Embrace Your Body, Banish the Love Handles

Excess fat on the sides, often called muffin tops or love handles, can be tough to get rid of. Trimming and toning your obliques is one of the most challenging areas to train.

Exercise and a proper diet are both important. The phrase “abs are made in the kitchen” is especially true for stubborn areas like love handles. However, consistent exercise can help you eliminate them for good.

Here are five exercises recommended by Orangetheory Fitness trainer, Brooke Geffre, to burn off your love handles:

1. **Planks:**
Start on your right elbow with your waist about a foot off the ground. Your right foot should be slightly in front of your left. Keep your core tight, bring your right knee towards your chest, and touch it to your left elbow. Return to the plank position and repeat for three sets of 10 to 12 reps on each side.

2. **Medicine Ball Twists:**
Lie flat with your arms by your side and a medicine ball between your legs. Lift your legs into a tabletop position, drop your knees to one side while keeping your back on the floor, then shift your legs to the other side. This targets your lower abs, love handles, and inner thighs. Do three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

3. **Bridge:**
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Raise your hips off the floor, pause at the top, and slowly lower back down. To increase difficulty, place a weight on your pelvis and repeat. Complete four sets of 10 to 15 reps.

4. **Side Bends:**
Stand and hold a dumbbell in each hand. Keeping your back straight, bend to the right side as if reaching for the ground with the dumbbell, then switch to the left side. Do three sets of 20 reps on each side.

5. **Russian Twists:**
Sit on your butt with knees slightly bent and elevated off the ground. Lean back slightly to balance on your butt, hold a dumbbell, and twist side to side for about 50 reps or one minute.
