Last year, over 80,000 people worldwide attempted to qualify for the Triathlon World Championship, and 2,000 competed on race day. In the US, triathlons have seen a significant rise, with more than 550,000 participants last year, up from about 100,000 in 1998. USA Triathlon oversees the sport and sponsors about 4,300 races annually.

According to the Sport and Industry Association, participation in triathlons increased by 59 percent between 2008 and 2011, with nearly 2 million athletes involved. Some participants are motivated by the challenge of completing each segment of the race. For some, it’s about proving their toughness, while others enjoy meeting new people with similar interests. Competing in triathlons can be about the excitement of the race, personal achievement, or winning.

Everyone has their own reasons for participating in triathlons. Many enjoy the variety and the mix of swimming, cycling, and running. Others appreciate the physical and mental challenge of surviving such an event. Some athletes even take part to be role models for their children.
